On the Drawing Board

Beauty of Brown 9" x 12"
Pastel on Velour Board

This is an eye study of the same dog that appears in the piece "Get Your Own"  - he's a pure-bred AKC registered Siberian Husky, Mikayla's Teddy the Lupin. He's 2 years old here, and I wanted to focus on his eyes. Sibes are famous for their china-blue eyes, or the mixture of two different eye colours, and I've had both types over the years, but I wanted to celebrate brown eyes, and his are glorious, a deep and beautiful chestnut.
Molly and Abby 11" x 14"

These are Jane's beautiful dogs; they are both rescues, and both Golden Retrievers. I loved this piece; it was fun to capture the differences between these lovely girls.  Abby, on the left, is young, with a deeper, redder coat and a far narrower face; Molly, on the right, is an old girl going grey, with a lovely pale coat and much broader, blunter face.
New Life 9" x 12"

This piece was one of my first attempts at working in pastels. Although I have spent many years in pencil and tradition oil on canvas, I had never worked with pastels, even as a kid. However, I was fortunate to be able to attend a workshop by the premiere pastel artist, Lesley Harrison, and spent three wonderful days in her classroom; this piece was the result. I learned very quickly that this really is my medium, and I love it. Lesley actually finished her demo piece and posted it to her blog; I love the contrast between how I handled these dogs and how she chose to render them; you can view her piece here.
Get Your Own 9" x 12"
Pastel on Velour Board

Mikayla's Teddy the Lupin, at 9 weeks old. This piece is a portrait of my own dog as a puppy. He's giving me what I refer to as 'the look'. He's a cheeky bugger, as most Sibe owners know, and that was HIS favorite toy. The funny thing is, his markings and facial expressions, although they almost look contrived and artificial here, are not. That's kind of the challenge of working with my huskies; their facial markings and general appearance always make them seem stuffed-animal like; this piece really reflects that aspect.
Raven Headstudy 9" x 12"
Pastel on Velour Board
I'm very fascinated by Ravens, and their reciprocal relationship with wolves in the wild. I did this headstudy as a prelude to a larger piece, as an exploration of rendering different types of feathers in an all-black bird. As any artist knows, black isn't really black - the only true black on this piece is the iris of the eyes - and there are elements of a rusty brown and a very desaturated blue in the shadows and highlights all over this piece.

Enchanted illustrations in pastel and mixed media by artist Ealasaid Witt

As a pet / wildlife / story illustrator, I love working with animals and bring out the magic I see in them and in the world. I also love to illustrate the old stories and wisdom of folktales, mythology and the oral history of our past.

I'm told that my paintings seem somehow alive; and I deeply believe in the wisdom of a Siberian shaman, who says 'Everything that is, is alive'... I love illustrating and bringing out the liveliness, magic and enchantment in all that is.

I currently do take commissions. My contact information is here.
